3D printing and artificial intelligence merged in Parallax Dress by ElektroCouture and Formlabs

PARALLAX DRESS BY LINA WASSONG

THE DESIGNER

Berlin-based engineer and designer Lina Wassong first became inspired to explore the aesthetic aspects of technology while living in San Francisco, the capital of tech. Wassong’s designs seek innovative ways of changing the analogue world into a digital environment. Apart from her work in the field of fashion design, she also publishes books and shares her passion for electronics through organized workshops.

THE CONCEPT

Self-learning systems and the integration of autonomous machines let us explore technology from a new perspective. Machines become more aware of their environment through artificial intelligence. The Parallax dress merges new intelligent technology with complex evolutionary behavior and makes us rethink intelligence in our digital age. The design concept is based on the unique nervous system of an octopus. The octopuses’ control center extends into all eight limbs, allowing the arms to move autonomously, which gives it specialized problem solving abilities.

THE TECHNOLOGY

Microcontrolling mechanisms within the dress make the six individually controlled arms interact with the environment by detecting movement through infrared sensing technology. Formlabs‘ high-resolution SLA 3D printing made the complex structural designs, for the electronic and mechanical components, possible.
